Tucked away on Lower Clapton Road, Lucky & Joy is a Chinese small plates dining concept that’s as playful as it is flavourful. The space is simply but thoughtfully decorated, with a buzzing, energetic atmosphere that instantly pulls you in.
We indulged in a variety of small plates, expertly recommended by our lovely waiter. The cold sesame noodles were easily our showstopper of the meal – full of flavour, absolutely delightful, and a perfect match with everything else on the table.
I’d never tried turnip cake before, but I can definitely say I’ll be having it again. It was unusually delicious, beautifully garnished with spring onions, sesame seeds, a poached egg, and chillies. Comforting, a little indulgent, and totally moreish – the kind of dish that feels familiar yet fresh, and keeps you going back for just one more bite.

The Hunan crispy pork belly was another standout. Fried with a delicious mix of crispy chilli, peanuts, and onions, it was perfectly crisp on the outside and melted in the mouth – completely addictive.
As a huge aubergine fan, I was thrilled with how Lucky & Joy handled the best vegetable on the planet. While the concept may not be new, the execution was flawless. Infused with a punchy sauce of garlic, soy, chilli, andblack vinegar, every bite was rich, satisfying, and packed with flavour.

We paired everything with a glass of orange wine – personally not my favourite, but honestly, the food more than made up for it.
In true London fashion, we Lime biked home… sadly, that ride was the untimely end for the crispy chilli oil we bought on our way out. RIP, little jar – you were worth it.
